Flip-up cool! This goes out to my former classmate Jerry, who used to wear flip-up glasses when we were in high school together. I owe you an apology: We gave you hard time, saying your glasses remind us of a toilet seat, while you insisted on the ingenious practicality of the whole thing. And you were right! Today, you’d be one of the coolest cats in the streets with these things. As we speak, eyewear companies are still catching up to what could be the next big trend. Just take the PH 3075 from the Polo Ralph Lauren Automotive Special Edition: It features a light metal frame with prescription lenses fitted into the interior, covered by sun lenses that flip-up in the style of the sun-visor in a car – adjustable to any kind of weather and stylistic preference. With its wood-effect temples and sleek metal lines, these aviator frames are living proof that you can be practical, and look tremendously cool all at the same time.

No other style in Cazal’s storied line-up would have been better suited than this humongous bulk of acetate frame, also known as the “Run DMC Glasses.” The 607 shaped the style of an entire generation. Ever since the late 1970s, the 607 has been as much of a style icon than the currently resurgent Wayfarer frames. The first impression: Wow, what a heavy-hitter! A blend of the familiar, heavy-weight quality materials with a rather untypical (at least for Cazal) matte black finish, combined with metal details on both sides, coated in black. A pair of production samples is sitting right in front of me on my desk, and I hardly dare to pick them up – true works of art, simple, massive, heavy, real. Touching the surfaces with your hand or face is a haptic experience, while the small golden brand icons add just the right amount of accents to the mix. The technically elaborate engravings are in-line with the overall colorways, completing the overall impression. Honestly, I’m not the biggest fan [...]

The technically elaborate engravings are in-line with the overall colorways, completing the overall impression.

Honestly, I’m not the biggest fan of the 607, mostly because it is rather slim and the saddle shaped for smaller noses. But at the same time, this re-release lives up to its legacy and will make a big impression among collectors: An authentic special release of an iconic eyewear style, in honor of the iconic designer who created it more than 30 years ago.

Make no mistake: This pair of glasses is no mere accessory for sunny days, but a memorial stone; a monument crafted from acetate. With 999 pieces of this honorary tribute, Cari Zalloni and his work are destined to live on forever.

In the spirit of our time, the images present outstanding people and stylistics with a natural, unvarnished aesthetic. But what could attract an equally young and cosmopolitan eyewear label such as Andy Wolf into this idyllic, natural setting? That’s easy. It’s in the symbiotic combination of calm, beauty and inspiration. And maybe also a certain rootedness in their home culture.
