Claire Goldsmith: Legacy

In einer Zeit, in der alles immer schneller geht, scheint es auch in der Mode eine Sehnsucht nach der „guten alten Zeit“ zu geben. Mit nostalgischer Note und dem Schmiss der 50er Jahre hat Claire Goldsmith nun eine Kollektion mit dem Namen Legacy (dt.: Vermächtnis) entworfen, die an die mondäne Mode eines vergangenen Jahrzehnts erinnert. Ein Duft von Tabak und altem Cognac liegt in der Luft. Der Kniff muss richtig sitzen, der Rand des Trägers heruntergeschlagen oder aufgestellt sein. Man trägt dezent gemusterte Jacketts, unter denen eine blütenweiße Hemdmanschette hervorblitzt, abgerundet durch das Bild einer Knopflochblume – bestenfalls einer Nelke. Claire Goldsmith ist die Ururenkelin von Oliver Goldsmith, einem der einflussreichsten Brillendesigner, der einst die Gesichter von Audrey Hepburn und Michael Caine mit seinen Modellen zierte. Vor fast 60 Jahren, im Juli 1954, gelang den Italienern Lino Lacedelli und Achille Compagnoni die Erstbesteigung des K2 – des zweitgrößten Bergs der Erde. Neben Sauerstoff und Steigeisen, waren sie mit speziellen Daunenjacken ausgerüstet, die das Modehaus Moncler eigens für die Expedition der Bergsteiger hatte anfertigen lassen. In Erinnerung an die todesmutigen Gipfelstürmer hat Moncler nun exklusiv für die Silmo 12 Brillen und 16 Sonnenbrillenmodelle entworfen. In Hinblick auf die Materialauswahl als auch ihre Formgebung sind die Brillen ebenso Bergsteiger-kompatibel wie einst die Daunenjacken: leicht und trotzdem robust!

John Varvatos is an internationally renowned fashion designer, known for producing menswear, accessories and fragrance under his own brand name. The self-taught designer maintains a constant finger on the pulse of current fashions, which also earned him a spot as one of the creatives behind luxury brand REM Eyewear. Since 2000, John Varvatos has been designing prescription frames and sunglasses for REM. His latest branded offering, the Soho Collection, features pantoscopic and aviator frames in three unique colorways. The frame designs include embossed temple inlays and bolt hinges with the signature John Varvatos touch: A perfect blend of casual Rock ’n’ Roll and masculine cool, for instance in the guitar-shaped hinges in select models. So far, John’s eyewear designs have won followers including KISS, Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Perry Farrell, ZZ Top, The Roots, Velvet Revolver and Lenny Kravitz. And starting this September, no other than Ringo Starr of The Beatles fame will be endorsing eyewear and fashion by John Varvatos. Cool!

Photographers simply love Cape Town. Not only because of the quality of light, but also the natural, rough atmosphere. Our team was looking forward to taking the trip to the sunny edge of the African continent in January. Our mission was to shoot the latest collection of glasses from Hoffmann Natural Eyewear. And since their glasses are exclusively made from natural resources, we set out to find some “natural” locations for our photo shoots. We ended up with some pretty dramatic backdrops in the woods beneath Table Mountain, the sand dunes of Table View and a dried-up lake in Worcester. And we didn’t mind the bad weather. MYKITA & Mark Borthwick Art Edition Book

For the sixth MYKITA campaign in collaboration with artist and photographer Mark Borthwick, friends, family and models gathered on Lanzarote, an island of volcanic origin surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. All photographs were captured with Borthwicks trusted twentyfive-year old analogue Leica camera. The prism-like colour effects created by overexposure of the film are distinctive of Borthwick’s warm, spontaneous style. MYKITA is publishing these wondrous pictures as an art edition photo book set, featuring the book plus a limited art edition print signed and numbered by the artist. There are three images to choose from, and 33 signed prints of each image are available, making it a total of 99 art editions.

The resulting look is a blend of opposites, equally frail and feminine and at the same time strong and impressive. Now the two designers behind Kaviar Gauche are applying their concept to eyewear in a collabo with of-the-moment label Brendel.
